    TECHNICAL DATA

The title is a direct Chinese translation. "Stupid melon" is the equivalent of "stupid idiot" and "Dumb egg" is the equivalent of "dum dum". Best of all, one character's head is melon shaped, and the other is egg shaped. Many thanks to a textbook translator working for the Republic of China Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission for literally translating the phrase "stupid melon".

Stupid Melon's is Egg's close friend and assistant.

Dumb Egg's is the Mayor of Sunshine City.

Various holidays are observed with a special color strip where instead of two panels, the strip is one big vertical picture. These holidays include Chinese folk holidays, international holidays, ROC holidays, and some others.

The comic strip is set in Sunshine City, which is a variation on the original Sunshine City comic and Sunshine City Chronicles (not available online). However, the Sunshine City of Stupid Melon Dumb Egg is no glorious place where dramatic stories happen, it is a mundane industrial city that would appear as if it has seen better days, except that it never has. Sunshine City is home to No. 1 Chemical, its largest employer and polluter.

Sunshine City is located in Taiwan but is not based on any particular city, though it's a little bit of many. It's actual name is Taihsi City- translation-"West Taiwan". There is a Taipei City (North)- population 2 million, largest city and capital, Taitung City (East)- not such a big place, but the largest on the eastern coast, Tainan City (South)- a large city of a few hundred thousand, and one of the island's oldest, and Taichung City (Central)- the third largest city. There is no Taihsi City. There is a Taihsi Village with about 20,000 people in it. The fictitious Taihsi is located in the same geographical area. See map on 7/20/2001 comic (#2).

Across the river from Sunshine City is Moonshine City, a first-class internationally known city. In Chinese text it is referred to as Taishang City (Above). So far no information is available on Taishia City (Below).

The Sunshine City Hall building is new to this comic, although it wasn't specifically designed for it. It is part government building, part community center, part housing project. More on it on the Characters page.

Stupid Melon Dumb Egg characters appear in the Science Comedy Posters, which were created at the same the first SMDE comics were created.

Stupid Melon Dumb Egg characters also act as promoters for Cell Phone Racing. Don't ask, just read.

The comic strip is drawn with a wide tipped "duck-billed" ink pen and black India Ink. Sunday panels are colored with colored pencil. Up to August 29, 2002, the original frame size for Monday-Saturday was 10.5 cm wide and 10 cm high. From August 30, 2002 onward, the comic strip has been adjusted to standard proportions (13:4 aspect ratio) so each frame is now 11.5 cm wide and 8 cm high. Sunday panels are 8 cm squares. Sunday comics for August 25, 2002 and later and daily comics from August 30, 2002 and later are stamped with my seal, which only has my surname (Twu) on it. From December 2003 onward, comics are drawn as 7"x7" squares.
